The Verona Lady Wildcats brought home the championship trophy from the Marionville girls tournament by defeating Miller 96-84 on Saturday night.
"We were again able to keep our composure and hit big free throws late in the game, which enabled us to keep our lead and win the game," said Coach Ryan Yates.
Verona never trailed in the game, leading 18-14 at the end of the first quarter and 34-30 at halftime. A big third quarter saw the Lady Wildcats outscore Miller 32-13 for a 64-43 advantage that was too big to overcome. Despite a 41-point fourth quarter for Miller, Verona managed 30 points of their own to earn the victory and the well-deserved championship hardware.
Jessica Smith was unstoppable with 46 points for the Wildcats. Smith was 30 for 39 from the free throw line and also contributed six rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.
Tristan Carrasquillo also had a strong game, putting up a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She also was credited with three assists and one block.

Carrasquillo, Chadd and Smith were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Mt. Vernon finished the tournament in third place by defeating Ash Grove 68-48. Cassville lost the fifth place game to Pleasant Hope 57-46.
