Lady Eagles overpower Greenfield on Friday

Monday, January 25, 2010

The Pierce City Lady Eagles picked up a regular season non-conference victory over Greenfield, 67-30, on Friday night.

The girls from Pierce City led 20-10 after the first quarter and then expanded their advantage by halftime to 37-16. In the last two stanzas of the game, the Lady Eagles dominated, outscoring Greenfield 30 to 12 for the final score.

"Overall we played really hard," said Coach Marty Rinehart. "The varsity team shot the ball better than we have in awhile. It started with Megan (Golubski) who hit three of her five threes in the first quarter."

Golubski led Pierce City's scoring attack with 19 points, and Kaelyn Osborn added 17. Others scoring for the Lady Eagles were: Taylor Mettlach, 11; Rachel Miller, Krishna Merriman and Emily Ashley, 6 each; and Jennifer Velten, 2.

Rebound leaders were Osborn and Mettlach with 6 each followed by Abby Ashley with five and Emily Ashley with four. Osborn as the Lady Eagles' steal leader with five. Parrigon took the ball away three times.

"I felt like we had pretty good balanced scoring and did a good job of taking care of the ball," added Coach Rinehart. "We gave up way too many offensive rebounds, but other than that did a good job defensively."

Pierce City also won the junior varsity contest 31-13.

Scorers in the jayvee contest for the Lady Eagles were: Becca Hatfield, 9; Mettlach, 5; Mattie Parrigon and Faith Strong, 4 each; Merriman, 3; and Emily Ashley, Brianna Zebert and Emily Holland, 2 each.
