A string of 11 unanswered points by the Lady Cubs near the end of the third quarter and early in the last period was the deciding factorin Monett's exciting 47-42 Big 8 Conference win over the Aurora Lady Houn' Dawgs.
Madison Carlin gave Monett an early 2-0 lead in the opening minute with a break-away basket. The two teams went back and forth in the first stanza, which ended on a jumper by Aurora's Beki Breshears in the waning seconds of the quarter to give the Lady Houn' Dawgs a 9-7 advantage.
Hunter Glouse, of the Lady Cubs, erased the lead quickly in the opening seconds of the second quarter with a three-point play, but Aurora bounced back to regain the lead.
Aurora managed a 21-17 lead with two minutes to go in the half only to see the Lady Cubs go on a run. Three free throws each by Carlin and Glouse in the final 1:45 of the first half enabled Monett to assume a 23-21 lead by intermission.
A pair of charity tosses by Carlin at the 6:01 mark of the third quarter gave Monett its biggest lead of the game at 25-21 to complete a surge of eight consecutive points. Aurora charged back with eight straight points of its own, capped by a trey from Talia Pilkenton, to give the Lady Houn' Dawgs a 29-25 lead with 3:57 remaining in the third period.
With two minutes left in the quarter, Aurora still was ahead 31-29, and then the Lady Cubs began their streak of 11 straight points that proved to be the game's turning point. Carlin started the push with a lay-up with three minutes to go in the quarter. A basket by Monett's Amanda McKinney to open the final period capped the run as the Lady Cubs led 40-31.
With Monett holding a 43-33 lead with 5:22 left in the game, Aurora made one final rally, reeling off seven straight points to close to within three at 43-40.
McKinney gave the Lady Cubs more breathing room by scoring a basket with 44 seconds left. After a pair of free throws by Aurora's Hobson, Carlin iced the game with a lay-up in the final 10 seconds.
Carlin led Monett in scoring with 18 points. Others adding to the Lady Cubs' point total were Glouse with 12 points, Beckett with 8 points, McKinney with 5 points and Danielle Neill and Jenny Frazier with 2 points each.
Frazier led the team in rebounds with six. Aubrey Lemaster was the team leader in assists with three and in steals with four.
Pilkenton and Breshears each had 9 points for Aurora.
Monett went to 4-8 on the season and 1-1 in the league.
Monett also won the junior varsity game over Aurora 39-34.
Scoring for the Monett jayvee were Caroline McKinney with 11 points, Mackenzie Lay with 8 points, Anna Cloud with 6 points, Nicollette Fellwock with 5 points, Jessica Schmidt with 4 points, Jessica Harper with 3 points and Danielle Neill with 2 points.
Monett will host Diamond tonight in a non-conference game.
