Every comeback attempt by the Monett Lady Cubs was countered by visiting Carl Junction on Monday as Monday lost its first Big 8 Conference basketball game 61-42.
Monett, 0-1 in the league, dropped to 3-8 overall.
Fifty-one seconds into the game the Lady Cubs had a 3-0 lead. Jenny Frazier hit a free throw and econds later, Madison Carlin stole the ball and fed Hunter Glouse with a basket.
|The two teams continued to battle back and forth early.||After Carl Junction had taken a 4-3 lead, Frazier dropped in a short jumper to cut the Lady Cubs back on top 5-4. However, the visitors scored the next 5 points initiating a Monett timeout, and Carl Junction would not trail again.|
Later in the opening period, the Lady Bulldogs ripped off 8 straight points for a 17-7 lead before Frazier dropped in a lay-up to stop the spurt. The quarter ended with Carl Junction in front 19-15.
Amanda McKinney's trey for Monett at the 6:12 mark in the second quarter enabled the Lady Cubs to get to within 2 points again at 22-20, but Carl Junction answered with 6 straight points before Dedre Beckett's basket from close in broke that string near the end of the first half. Carl Junction led 34-27 at intermission.
Carl Junction continued to pull away in the third stanza, building a 15-point lead at 47-32 with 45 seconds to play. A trey by McKinney with 20 seconds to go brought the Lady Cubs to within 12 points.
Glouse opened the fourth quarter with a free throw to make the score 47-36. A 3-point play by McKinney with 5:16 left in the game enabled the Lady Cubs to once again climb to within 11 points at 50-39, but Carl Junction answered with a trey and Monett could get no closer.
Frazier led the Lady Cubs in scoring with 12 points. Also scoring for Monett were McKinney with 9 points, Carlin and Glouse with 7 points each, Lemaster with 5 points and Beckett with 2 points.
McKinney led Monett in assists with four. Frazier was the team leader in rebounds with seven.
Monett also lost the junior varsity game to Carl Junction 48-28. Monett was outscored 36-15 in the second half.
Scoring for the Monett jayvee were Danielle Neill with 10 points, Jessica Schmidt and Anna Cloud with 6 points each, Cheryl Barnes with 4 points and Raigan Ratliff with 2 points.
Monett plays at Aurora in a Big 8 contest on Thursday.
