Verona, SW Notch Girls Basketball Victories

The Verona Lady Wildcats and the Southwest Lady Trojans won but Purdy and Pierce City lost in area girls basketball games played Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Verona raced to a 20-4 first quarter lead and went on to beat Southwest 65-43 in an Ozark 7 Conference encounter.

Tristan Carrasquillo led Verona to the victory with 25 points. Also scoring for Verona were Jenna Chadd with 18 points, Jessica Smith with 13 points, Beth Bigham with 3 points and Taylor Pinkly, Jori Dodson and Kelsei Krueger with 2 points each.

Kirstie Ickes led Southwest in scoring with 19 points. Other players scoring for Southwest were Michaela Mitchell with 16 points, Vanessa Cuevas with 3 points, Jacey Gundel and Kayla Sammarco with 2 points each and Cady Swindle with 1 point.

At Thomas Jefferson on Monday, the Southwest Lady Trojans blanked the host team 13-0 in the first quarter and went on to win the Ozark 7 Conference game 53-14.

Ickes led Southwest in scoring with 29 points. Also scoring for the Lady Trojans were Swindle and Cuortney Breamer with 9 points each and Sammarco with 6 points.

Despite outscoring the visiting Seneca Lady Indians 39-31 in the second half on Monday, Purdy could not overcome a poor first half and lost the non-conference contest 69-67.

Shelby White was Purdy's leading scorer with 19 points. Other players scoring for the Lady Eagles were Addy Roller with 17 points, Audrey Patton with 13 points, Brooke Swadley with 8 points, Shelly Scott with 6 points and Brittany Mareth with 4 points.

Pierce City on Monday fell behind 36-14 after the opening period on the way to losing the non-league game to Mt. Vernon 84-38.

Kaelyn Osborn was Pierce City's leading scorer with 12 points. Also scoring for the Lady Eagles were Emily Ashley with 7 points, Rachel Miller with 6 points, Abby Ashley with 4 points, Megan Golubski, Taylor Mettlach, Brianna Zebert and Beth Parrigon with 2 points each and Krishna Merriman with 1 point.
