Monett DWI campaign gets results

Monday, January 11, 2010

The Monett Police Department recently participated in the holiday statewide You Drink & Drive, You Lose campaign, which was held from Dec. 7 through Dec. 13, 2009.

According to Sergeant Jerry Harrison with the Monett Police Department, officers issued a total of 18 traffic tickets during the enforcement effort.

The violations issued included nine speeding tickets and eight other traffic violations. In addition, one arrest was made for driving while intoxicated.

"Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is never worth the risk of a tragedy," said Monett Police Chief Tim Schweder. "We are working to keep our roads safer."

Driving while intoxicated remains one of the top causes of fatal car crashes in Missouri. In 2008, 262 people were killed, 1,113 people were seriously injured and 3,398 people received minor injuries as a result of crashes involving an impaired driver.

"Enforcement efforts like this one help to take impaired drivers off the road and make traveling in Missouri safer," added Schweder.

Funding for the campaign was provided through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Division.
