First half dominance carried both the Southwest Trojans and the Exeter Lady Tigers to basketball victories last night.
Southwest took a 39-16 lead by intermission on the way to defeating host Pierce City 60-47 in a non-conference game.
The Trojans improved to 9-2 on the year while Pierce City dropped to 3-8.
Southwest jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Wayne Joe Sooter converted a three-point play with 5:10 to go in the first quarter to cut the Trojan lead to 6-5. That would be as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the night.
Southwest's Austin Rettman followed Sooter's effort with a trey. A nifty lob by Josh Hartin to Levi Roberts resulted in a basket and a trey by Roberts put Southwest ahead 14-5 at the 3:15 mark. Derek Turner's basket for Pierce City stopped the Trojan streak, but the Southwest was off and running. The quarter ended with the Trojans on top 18-11.
Southwest, more specifically Roberts, took over at the start of the second period. Roberts scored the first 7 points of the quarter with his last 2 points coming off a lob by Tyler Ferguson. Southwest was ahead 25-11 before a free throw by Turner broke that scoring streak with 5:44 left until halftime.
The Trojans kept the pressure going, outscoring Pierce City 14-5 in the final five minutes of the half for a big 39-16 lead.
Pierce City actually outscored the Trojans in the second half, 31-21, but it was far from enough to overcome Southwest's first half explosion. Sooter's trey at the 4:26 mark of the third stanza capped an 8-2 Pierce City run to open the second half, resulting in a timeout by Southwest Coach Jason Horn.
The Trojans, behind the play of Hartin, Roberts and Skylar Knoll, managed to outscore Pierce City 8-4 the rest of the half for a 49-28 lead entering the final stanza.
Led by the scoring of Baldwin and Turner, the Eagles outscored Southwest 19-11 in the last quarter to get to within 13 points by game's end.
Baldwin led Pierce City in scoring with 21 points. Also scoring for the Eagles were Turner with 9 points, Sooter with 7 points, Cedric O'Hara with 5 points, Chance Chapman and Zach Crouch with 2 points each and Garen Cantrell with 1 point.
Roberts powered Southwest with 26 points. Other Trojan scoers were Hartin with 14 points, Knoll with 12 points, Rettman and Mathew Whittington with 3 points each and Josh Cutberth with 2 points.
The Lady Tigers raced to a 40-14 lead by halftime enroute to beating Wheaton 78-23 in an Ozark 7 Conference contest.
Exeter took an 18-8 first quarter lead against Wheaton and then put the game completely out of reach by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 29-5 in the third quarter.
Destani Stensrud fired in 32 points for Exeter. She was helped by Shelby Bowman with 19 points, Nicholle O'Neill and Lyndsay Kidwell with 5 points each, Abbey Scott and Ashton Scott with 4 points each, Chelbie Kern with 3 points and Haley Fields, Breanna Varner and Sarah Staples with 2 points each.
Jessica Haynes led Wheaton in scoring with 9 points. Also scoring for the Lady Bulldogs were Megan Brattin with 6 points, Kaitlin England with 4 points and Kasey Littlefield and Hailey Adams with 2 points each.
