Pea Ridge, Ark., used a big third quarter to defeat the Southwest Trojans basketball team 73-69 for the championship of the Southwest Holiday Tournament last Wednesday.
Other results were Billings over Purdy 58-44 for third place, East Newton over Wheaton 54-42 for fifth place and Pierce City over Exeter 45-44 for seventh place.
First place game
Southwest, trailing 32-28 at the half, was outscored 24-9 in the third stanza and could not recover despite scoring 32 points in the fourth quarter.
Skylar Knoll led Southwest in scoring with 20 points. Also scoring for Southwest were Josh Hartin and Levi Roberts with 16 points each, Tyler Ferguson with 10 points, Mathew Whittington with 4 points and Austin Rettman with 3 points.
Third place game
The Purdy Eagles fell to Billings 58-44 despite Landon Terry's game-high 19 points.
The Eagles were a consensus underdog to Billings, a newcomer to the tournament in 2009. Purdy played tough and trailed only 26-23 at halftime after leading 13-9 after one period. Chris Kennedy's team forged ahead again in the third period, as Kevin Miller fed Terry for a fast break layup and a 29-28 lead.
Billings roared back with a 17-5 run to finish the third period with a 45-34 lead and then maintained a double-digit lead for the remaining 4:53 of the game in earning the third place trophy.

Fifth place game
Wheaton, ahead 14-7 after the first period, was outscored 21-10 in the second stanza and went on to lose to East Newton.
Scoring for Wheaton were Donovan Bartkoski with 18 points, Blake Dilbeck and Sean Goostree with 6 points each, James Musick with 4 points, Jakob Beck with 3 points, Jory Bartkoski and Bubba Galvan with 2 points each and Jessie Mitchell with 1 point.
Seventh place game
In the closest contest of the night, Pierce City's Wayne Jo Sooter streaked coast-to-coast for the winning layup at the buzzer as the Eagles stunned the Exeter Tigers, 45-44. Zach Wubker's free throw with eight seconds remaining had put the Tigers on top, but Sooter pushed the ball up the right sideline and cut in for the dagger as the horn echoed in the gym.
The Tigers fought back from a 17-4 first quarter deficit, holding the Eagles to just 7 points in the second quarter and 5 in the third. Scott White's Tigers tied the game in the third period on a three-point play by Tyler White at the 4:20 mark. Wubker's layup gave the Tigers their first lead at 31-29 at the final break.
Exeter led 40-37 early in the fourth period and gained another three-point advantage, 42-39, with 1:28 to play. Pierce City knotted the score at 43 on Sooter's offensive board and putback to set the table for the frantic final seconds.
