Bouncing back from an opening game loss, the Verona Lady Wildcats claimed consolation honors last week in the Ash Grove basketball event by logging wins over Humansville and Exeter.
Verona defeated Humansville 62-31 in the second round of the tournament.
"I thought we responded well after playing a poor game against Couch," said Verona Coach Ryan Yates. "We showed what we were capable of doing on the court."
Tristan Carrasquillo led Verona's scoring attack with 22 points. Also scoring for Verona were Jenna Chadd with 20 points, Jessica Smith with 15 points, Jori Dodson with 3 points and Beth Bigham with 2 points.
Bigham led the team in rebounds with eight. Smith was the team leader in assists with six, and Carrasquillo led the team in steals with six.
Verona jumped out to a 16-4 first quarter lead against Exeter and went on to win 65-44.
""We kept up the intensity throughout the game," Yates said. "Exeter is a very good team, and we feel this is a great win for us."
Smith led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 20 points. Also scoring for Verona were Chadd with 17 points, Carrasquillo with 13 points, Bigham with 9 points and Dodson with 6 points.
Smith was the team leader in rebounds with 10.
Scoring for Exeter were Destani Stensrud with 15 points, Abbey Scott with 11 points, Shelby Bowman with 9 points, Sara Staples and Ashton Scott with 4 points each and Nicholle O'Neill with 1 point.
