Work on school property highlighted action taken at the December meeting of the Verona R-7 Board of Education.
Richard Werner, the school district's architect, presented a preliminary drawing of the new locker room space. The board gave Werner permission to hire Heithaus Engineering Associates as civil engineer on the project.
Superintendent William Sweet informed the board that there is some asbestos present on the Strawn property, which was sold last summer to the school district to be used as a parking lot. The board voted to authorize the superintendent to get asbestos bids and to have Ermen Hillhouse demolish the old house once the asbestos has been removed.
The school audit and audit evaluation program was approved as presented.
A non-binding Race to the Top resolution was approved as a way to get money sent to the state by the federal government if money is available.
A personnel evaluation plan program was approved as presented.
The board approved three out-of-state and one reward trip for FFA.
Sweett and Board Secretary Kristy Madewell were approved to be on the signature card for the school's safety deposit box at Community National Bank, giving them both access to that box.
Sweet mentioned that the class pictures in the old high school will be moved into the new school lobby soon.
Matt Pruente, board member Dale Whitlock and the Verona Lions Club were recognized for their efforts in getting the playground finished.
The next meeting of the board will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.
