The Monett Lady Cubs won their first game of the season but the boys were defeated as the Neosho Holiday Basketball Tournament continued on Tuesday.
Coming off a tough overtime loss the day before, the Lady Cubs rebounded with a 64-46 win over Kansas City Ruskin in the consolation round.
Monett is now 1-6 on the year.
The Lady Cubs took an 18-11 first quarter lead and were never seriously threatened the rest of the way. Monett led 31-23 at the half and 48-36 after three quarters.
Balanced scoring was the key for Monett. Madison Carlin led the Lady Cubs with 19 points. Also scoring for Monett were Hunter Glouse with 16 points, Jenny Frazier with 10 points, Amanda McKinney with 8 points, Dedre Beckett with 5 points, Aubrey Lemaster with 4 points and Jessica Schmidt with 2 points.
Frazier led the team in rebounds with 12. McKinney topped the team in assists with eight.
Monett played McDonald County on Wednesday.
Despite a furious fourth quarter rally, the Monett Cubs fell to Springfield Central 64-59 in the consolation round.
Monett trailed 27-17 at intermission and 47-43 after three quarters. The Cubs then outscored Central 27-17 in the last quarter, but it wasn't enough.
Monett is now 2-7 on the season.
"I was disappointed with our lack of energy and effort in the first half," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "We have to put four good quarters together in order to be successful."
Kennon Cox led the Cubs in scoring with 17 points. Also scoring for Monett were Spenser Witt with 10 points, Kyle Woods, Jacob Fair, Tyler Green and Devin Steward with 6 points each, Josh Shaner with 4 points and Trenton Pierce with 2 points.
Monett continued tourney play in the loser's bracket late Wednesday.
