Christmas, New Year's events planned in coming week

This week in Springfield: Free ice skating will be offered 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday at the Mediacom Ice Park. Skate rental is $2.50.

The Starlab Planetarium, 438 E. St. Louis, offers a recap of the year on Dec. 28.

The First Night celebration planned for Dec. 31 starts at 5:30 p.m. Performers will present a wide range of music and theater at 1984, Abundant Life Covenant Church (Little Hoover's Big Band 6 to 8 p.m.), Vandivort Center Theater ("Forbidden Opera" from 8 to 10 p.m.), Discovery Center, Gillioz Theater, Jordan Valley Park, Kentwood Ballroom (Caduceus, the doctors band, from 8 p.m. to midnight), Landers Theatre (YES Troupe from 8 to 10 p.m.), Mediacom Ice Park, Ozarks Regional YMCA and the Park Central Library until 12 a.m. Advanced tickets are $7.

This week at the Outland Ballroom, 326 South Ave., will be the Hundred Hand String Band on Saturday and the Detectives on Dec. 31.

This week in northwest Ark.: Running through Sunday is TheatreSquared's presentation of "'Twas the Night," a new comedy play for the season, at the Studio Theater, 505 W. Spring St. in Fayetteville. Tickets are $22.

This week at George's Majestic Lounge, 519 W. Dickson in Fayetteville, will be the Big Smith Christmas show on Saturday. Tickets are $8. On Dec. 31 Ben Del Shreve, the Ben Miller Band, Full House and Oreo Blue play, beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15.

At GoodFolk Productions, 229 N. Block in Fayetteville, Camptown Ladies from Texas perform at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12.

The 12th annual First Night celebration takes place at the Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville. Blues, jazz, folk music are dance are featured.

This week in Joplin: This is the final weekend for the 62nd annual Membership Show at the Spiva Center for the Arts, Third and Wall, in the main gallery. The show of oil landscapes by Jean Howard in the regional gallery also closes on Sunday.

On Dec. 31, an AC/DC tribute concert plus the Dirty Deeds band plays a New Year's concert at 7 p.m. at the Kitchen pass, 1212 S, Main. Admission is $10.

At the Downstream Casino, west of Joplin, the New Year's party on Dec. 31 begins at 7 p.m. The ABS Band will offer a Motown review. Shuttle service offered every half hour from Joplin Memorial Hall.

This week in Miami, Okla.: A New Year's Eve party is planned at the Buffalo Run Casino.

This week in Tulsa, Okla.: B.B. King performs at 8 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Mabee Center, 7777 S. Lewis Ave. near Oral Roberts University. Tickets are $49.50 to $113.

Outdoor ice skating will be available through Jan. 4, 2010 for Arvest Winterfest on Third Street between Denver and Frisco by the BOK Center downtown.

The Tulsa Holiday Circuit Horse Show runs Dec. 27 to Jan. 2, 2010 at the Expo Square Livestock Complex, 4145 E. 21st St.

This week in Kansas City: On Saturday, the Celtic band the Elders play at the Beaumont Club, 4050 Pennsylvania Ave.

The Kansas City Ballet's production of Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Nutcracker" continues at the Music Hall, 301 W. 13th St., at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday.

On Dec. 31, playing at the Hyatt Hotel, 2345 McGee St., will be Drew 6, Four Fried Chickens and a Coke, Charlie and the Stingrays and Outlaw Junkies. At the Kansas City International Expo Center, 11730 NW Ambassador Dr., Parliament and Funkadelic Confunkshun play. The Stone Temple Pilots will play at the Midland Theater, 1228 Main.

The Kansas City Repertory Theater's production of "A Christmas Story: The Musical" runs through Sunday at the Spencer Theater, 4949 Cherry on the University of Missouri campus.

"Little House on the Prairie" with period music is running through Dec. 29 at the Coterie Theatre in Crown Center at Grand and Pershing Road. Shows are at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday through Dec. 29. Tickets can be ordered by calling 816-474-6552.

This week in St. Louis: On Dec. 30, the Zac Brown Band plays at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Tickets are $31 and $37.

On Dec. 31, Cowboy Mouth performs at Harrah's Casino. threee-hour ride on a 19th century riverboat will begin at 9:30 p.m. from near the arch. Cost is $80, including dinner.

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra will give a New Year's Concert at 7:30 p.m. at Powell Hall, Grand and Delmar.

A stage version of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" runs through Sunday at the Fox Theatre, 527 N. Grand, Tickets are $30 to $70.

On Dec. 29, Larry Johnson performs at the Sheldon Concert Hall, 3648 Washington Blvd. in a new recording release concert at 7:30 p.m.

Performances of "Black Nativity" by Langston Hughes will be given by the Black Repertory Theater through Sunday at the Grandel Theatre, 3610 Grandel Square near Powell Hall.

A First Night Festival will be held in the theaters, churches and buildings in Grand Center, from Olive to Delmar on Grand, on Dec. 31, beginning at 6 p.m.

This week at the Casa Loma Ballroom, 3354 Iowa Ave., the swing and rock-a-billy band Hudson and the Hoodoo Cats play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Dancing continues to 12:30 a.m. Tickets are $10.

This week at the Pageant, 6161 Delmar in University City, the El Monstero tribute show to Pink Floyd has a final performance on Sunday. Four previous shows sold out. Tickets are $25. The Unconscious with the Great Crusades plays Dec. 28. Pale Divine with the Stranded Lads plays Dec. 29. Vandalyzm, Black Spade, Tef Poe, Rockwell Knuckles and Ashleyliane Dance Company plays Dec. 30. Dr. Zhivegas plays Dec. 31.
