Dominating the boards and using quicknesss, the visiting Carthage Tigers downed the Monett Cubs 64-39 in a non-conference basketball game on Tuesday.
Monett fell to 2-6 on the year.
"I thought our effort was better," said MHS Coach Ty Goetz. "We had too many empty possession early in the third quarter that really hurt us."
Free throws by Tyler Green had the Cubs even at 2-2 in the first minute of the game. A trey by Desmond Buerge shortly later put Carthage ahead to stay.
Trenton Pierce scored for the Cubs from close in to get Monett within a point 5-4 midway through the opening stanza but Carthage went on a 10-0 run to take control. Spenser Witt's lay-in with 2:31 left in the first quarter stopped the Tiger streak. The quarter ended with the visitors on top 18-9.
In the second quarter the Cubs got to within 8 points on three occasions. A trey by Jarred Witt cut the Carthage lead to 20-12 early in the quarter. Free throws Kyle Woods followed at the 5:10 mark with a basket by Witt enabled Monett to get to 28-20 but the Cubs would get no closer. The half ended with Carthage on top 35-24.
The Tigers took complete charge in the third quarter, reeling off 6 straight points and a 41-24 advantage before the Cubs would finally score on a 3-point play by Kennon Cox with 4:01 to go. The Tigers led 53-34 at quarter's end.
The pace slowed in the final quarter with Carthage still outscoring the Cubs 11-5.
Cox led the Cubs in scoring with 9 points. Also scoring for Monett were Green with 8 points, Josh Shaner with 6 points, Woods with 5 points, Spenser Witt with 4 points, Devin Steward with 3 points and Pierce and Jarred Witt with 2 points each.
Monett also lost the preliminary tilt to the Carthage jayvees 52-44.
Scoring for the junior varsity Cubs were Aaron Hall with 16 points, Jacob Fair with 10 points, Steward with 9 points, Jarred Witt with 4 points, Tyler Webb with 3 points and Christian Wooldridge with 2 points.
Monett will play Central Park at 1:30 p.m. on Monday in the Neosho Holiday Tournament.
