The Monett City Council has voted to award a contract for the purchase of fuel for city vehicles to Murphy's Oil, switching the service from the local H&W Oil.
After discussing the matter in a work session, council members concluded the Murphy's deal, at a one-cent-per-gallon discount, offered greater advantages compared to a two-cent deal from H&W. Murphy's will supply a car for each driver to track who made the purchase and for which vehicle, including odometer readings.
"We decided we needed better internal control of fuel purchases," said City Administrator Dennis Pyle. "When we went out to bid, we decided we wanted this type of system. Murphy could do it."
Action was taken during a special meeting during the first week in December to give enough time for a three-week transition, allowing Murphy to begin service on Jan. 1, 2010.
