The Monett Cubs boys and girls teams lost last night, as did the Purdy boys, but the Lady Eagles of Purdy posted a win.
Grabbing control in the second quarter, the Spokane Owls went on to upend the Monett Cubs 72-42 in a non-conference contest at Spokane.
Monett dropped to 2-4 on the year.
The two clubs battled to a 17-17 stand-off after the first quarter. Spokane then took command by outscoring the Cubs 21-8 in the second period. It was 53-32 in Spokane's favor after three quarters.
"I really feel like we played better than the score shows," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "Spokane's zone really hurt us in the second and third quarters."
Spenser Witt led Monett in scoring with 12 points. Also scoring for the Cubs were Kennon Cox and Tyler Green with 9 points each, Josh Shaner and Kyle Woods with 4 points each, Trenton Peirce with 2 points and Aaron Hall and Jarred Witt with 1 point each.
Woods topped the team in rebounds with 11.
Monett lost the junior varsity contest to Spokane 57-47.
Scoring for the Monett jayvees were Jacob Fair with 12 points, Devin Steward and Aaron Hall with 8 points each, Jarred Witt with 7 points, Tyler Webb with 6 points, Travis Thompson with 4 points and Christian Wooldridge with 2 points.
The Cubs will be at home in a non-league game against Republic on Friday.
The host McDonald County Lady Musangs took a 12-5 first quarter lead and stayed ahead all the way in turning back the Monett Lady Cubs 60-45.
Monett fell to 0-5 on the season.
Scoring for the Lady Cubs were Hunter Glouse with 19 points, Jenny Frazier with 10 points, Amanda McKinney with 7 points, Dedre Beckett with 4 points, Aubrey Lemaster with 3 points and Madison Carlin with 2 points.
Carlin led the team in rebounds with seven and in steals with five. McKinney was the team leader in assists with eight.
Monett also lost the jayvee game 55-15.
Scoring for the junior varsity Lady Cubs were Raigan Ratliff with 4 points, Anna Cloud and Jessica Harper with 3 points each, Jessica Schmidt and Cheryl Barnes with 2 points each and Danielle Neill with 1 point.
Monett next plays at 9 p.m. on Dec. 28 against Waynesville in the Neosho Holiday Tournament.
The host Purdy Lady Eagles outscored Southwest 30-12 in the first quarter enroute to winning 85-30.
Scoring for the Lady Eagles were Addy Roller with 25 points, Shelby White with 12 points, Audrey Patton and Brooke Swadley with 10 points each, Rachael Neill with 9 points, Mattie White and Chelsea Mareth with 6 points each, Shelby Scott with 3 points and Taylor Moller and Kristyn Cornman with 2 points each.
Scoring for Southwest were Michaela Mitchell with 13 points, Kirstie Ickes with 9 points, Courtney Breamer with 5 points, Jacey Gundel with 2 points and Cady Swindle with 1 point.
Southwest took a 22-8 first quarter lead and went on to defeat the Purdy Eagles 66-44.
Scoring for Purdy were Landon Terry with 17 points, Drew Williams with 7 points, Cody Hall with 6 points, Riley Veith with 5 points, Kevin Miller with 4 points, Devon Bennett with 3 points and T.J. Farris with 2 points.
Scoring for Southwest were Josh Hartin with 22 points, Levi Roberts with 21 points, Matthew Whittington with 7 points, Cam McCurdy and Skyler Knoll with 4 points each, Jeff Elkins with 3 points, Jacob Jennings with 2 points and Austin Rettman with 1 point.
