PC Lady Eagles Fall To E.N.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

In a non-conference basketball game at Pierce City on Monday, the East Newton Lady Patriots went on a 20-0 run in the first half to take control of the game on the way to defeating the Lady Eagles 49-35.

Pierce City dropped to 2-4 on the season.

Kaelyn Osborn, of the Lady Eagles, got the home team started on the right track with an early trey and a 3-0 lead. East Newton came back later in the first quarter to close to within a point at 9-8.

With two minutes left in the quarter, Rachel Miller hit a lay-up to give Pierce City another 3-point lead at 11-8. Then came the run by East Newton, keyed by Lindsey Bragg from outside and Katy Cooper from inside. The Lady Eagles would not score again for nearly eight minutes. By that time Pierce City was behind 31-11. Emily Ashley hit a trey with 1:09 to go in the half to stop the scoring drought. The half ended with East Newton in front 33-16.

In the third stanza a steal and basket by Osborn followed by a trey from Beth Parrigon enabled the Lady Eagles to climb to within 14 at 35-21 with 5:47 remaining, but East Newton went on another run to forge a 41-22 lead heading into the final stanza.

Pierce City had better luck in the last quarter, led by Parrigon and Emily Ashley, to outscore the Lady Patriots 13-8, but it was not nearly enough to overcome the huge East Newton lead.

Parrigon led Pierce City in scoring with 9 points. Also scoring for the Lady Eagles were Emily Ashley with 8 points, Osborn with 7 points, Abby Ashley with 6 points, Megan Golubski with 3 points and Rachel Miller with 2 points.

Parrigon led the team in steals with four, and Osborn had three thefts. Abby Ashley was the team leader in rebounds with eight.

Bragg and Raeshele Dollar each had 12 points for East Newton.

Pierce City did win the preliminary contest, beating the East Newton junior varsity 41-38.

Scoring for the jayvee Lady Eagles were Brianna Zebert with 9 points, Krishna Merriman and Becca Hatfield with 8 points each, Emily Ashley with 6 points, Emily Holland and Faith Strong with 4 points each and Jenn Velten with 2 points.

Pierce City will be at Wheaton on Friday.
