Neosho Handles MHS Cubs In Non-Conference Contes

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Hot-shooting Neosho, hitting with regularity both inside and out, easily turned back the Monett Cubs 72-44 last night in a non-conference basketball game a Neosho.

Monett dropped to 2-2 on the season.

"Neosho ran the floor well, and we didn't do a very good job of getting back in transition," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "They got of lot of easy baskets while we had to work hard to get ours."

Michael Lowe gave Neosho a 2-0 lead in the opening seconds with a lay-in off the tip-off. Monett countered with a short jumper by Kennon Cox to tie the game.

Baskets by Lowe, Corey Crandall and Marcus Middleton off of steals, a jumper by Zane Culp, and a 3-point play by Crandall pushed Neosho's lead to 13-2 before a trey by Monett's Devin Steward broke the Wildcat surge. The quarter ended with Neosho on top 18-7.

In the second period, the Cubs were able to trim the Neosho lead to 6 at 20-14 when Kyle Woods had a lay-in with 6:15 to go in the half. But the home team regrouped, taking advantage of turnovers, to build a 32-17 lead by intermission.

Neosho took complete charge in the third quarter. A trey by Lowe opened the scoring in the second half. The Wildcats opened up a big 49-23 lead with 1:43 to go in the third period before Monett got a basket from Josh Shaner.

The Cubs, led by Cox, Jacob Fair and Steward, managed to find the scoring range in the final quarter as Monett tallied 19 points. Neosho remained hot, however, scoring 20.

Cox was the leading scorer for the Cubs with 12 points. Also scoring for Monett were Woods, Fair and Green with 6 points each, Steward with 5 points, Aaron Hall with 3 points and Spenser Witt, Trenton Peirce and Shaner with 2 points each.

Peirce led the team in rebounds with five. Witt had two steals.
