Several Area Cage Teams Notch Victories

In a busy slate of area high school basketball on Monday and Tuesday, several teams recorded victories.

The Pierce City Eagles upended Wheaton 58-49 last night in a non-conference game.

Pierce City jumped out to an 11-4 first quarter lead enroute to the win.

Derek Turner led the Pierce City scoring attack with 17 points. Also scoring for the Eagles were Wayne Joe Sooter with 14 points, Robert Baldwin with 13 points, Cedric O'Hara and Cody Fitchpatrick with 6 points each and Chance Chapman with 2 points.

Donovan Bartkoski was Wheaton's leading scorer with 13 points. Also scoring for Wheaton were Bubba Galvan with 10 points, James Musick with 9 points, Jory Bartkoski with 6 points, Jesse Michell with 5 points and Sean Goostree and Kefe Robbins with 3 points each.

Pierce City lost to Stockton on Monday 59-57.

Scoring for the Eagles were Sooter with 17 points, Turner with 14 points, Baldwin with 11 points, O'Hara with 7 points, Cody Cox with 5 points and Zach Crouch with 3 points.

The Pierce City Lady Eagles fell to Crane 42-38 on Monday. Pierce City trailed 9-3 after the first stanza.

"We did a lot of good things throughout the game," said Pierce City Coach Ryan Yates. "We shot 24 percent from the field and that really killed us."

Beth Parrigon was Pierce City's top scorer with 9 points. Also scoring for the Lady Eagles were Rachel Miller with 8 points, Kaelyn Osborn and Megan Golubski with 7 points each, Emily Ashley with 5 points and Abby Ashley with 2 points.

Abby Ashley led the team in rebounds with 12. Osborn had four steals.

In a two-quarter junior varsity game, the Lady Eagles beat Crane 30-8. Brianna Zebert had 16 points for Pierce City.

The Exeter Lady Tigers edged Verona 49-47 last night. Exeter led 19-13 at the half and then withstood Verona's late charge.

Destani Stensrud led Exeter's scoring attack with 16 points. Also scoring for Exeter were Ashton Scott with 10 points, Shelby Bowman with 9 points, Abbey Scott and Sarah Staples with 6 points each and Shelbie Kern with 2 points.

Jessica Smith had 20 points and eight rebounds for Verona. Also scoring for the Lady Wildcats were Tristan Carrasquillo with 10 points, Jenna Chadd and Jori Dodson with 6 points each and Beth Bigham with 5 points.

The Purdy Eagles defeated Joplin McAuley 60-43 on Monday. Purdy led 18-10 after the first quarter.

Scoring for Purdy were Landon Terry with 17 points, Drew Williams with 12 points, Cody Hall, Devon Bennett and Kevin Miller with 7 points each, Alex Hayworth with 4 points and Riley Veith and Ganer Nelson with 3 points each.

The Purdy Lady Eagles also beat McAuley 75-30. Purdy led 30-9 after the opening period.

Scoring for the Lady Eagles were Shelby White with 22 points, Addy Roller with 20 points, Audrey Patton with 10 points, Brooke Swadley with 9 points, Shelby Scott with 6 points, Rachel Neill and Brittany Meredith with 3 points each and Chelsea Mareth with 2 points.

The Wheaton Lady Bulldogs fell to Diamond 39-19 on Monday.

Scoring for Wheaton were Mica Tichenor with 8 points, Kasey Littlefield with 5 points, Jessica Haynes with 4 points and Raschelle Hickman with 2 points.
