MHS Cubs, Verona And Purdy Girls Close Tournaments With Wins

The Monett Cubs and the Verona Lady Wildcats took consolation honors, and the Purdy Lady Eagles won third place at area basketball tournaments this weekend.

Carthage Tournament

In the boys Carthage Tournament, the Monett Cubs downed the Nevada Tigers 42-34 to win the consolation game.

"We did a nice job defensively and rebounding," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "I was proud of the way we pressured their guards and caused turnovers."

Monett took a 22-14 lead by intermission and then took control by outscoring the Tigers 17-6 in the third stanza.

Kennon Cox led the Cubs in scoring with 11 points. Also scoring for Monett were Tyler Green and Spenser Witt with 9 points each, Jared Witt with 4 points, Josh Shaner with 3 points and Kyle Woods, Jacob Fair and Travis Thompson with 2 points each.

Woods was the team leader in rebounds with six. Cox and Witt each had three steals.

Monett will be at Neosho tomorrow night for a non-conference outing.

Aurora Tournament

The Purdy Lady Eagles took third place by nipping McDonald County 37-36, and the Verona Lady Wildcats won the consolation game by beating Aurora 59-45.

Purdy outscored McDonald County 9-7 in the last quarter to get the victory.

Addy Roller was Purdy's leading scorer with 16 points. Also scoring for the Lady Eagles were Shelby White with 7 points, Brooke Swadley and Audrey Patton with 5 points each and Chelsea Mareth and Shelby Scott with 2 points each.

Verona employed balanced scoring to turn back Aurora. Tristan Carrasquillo and Jessica Smith each tallied 18 points for the Lady Wildcats, and Jenna Chadd added 16 points.

"The girls worked hard and were in a better rhythm," said Verona Head Coach Ryan Yates.

Carrasquillo led the Lady Wildcats in rebounds with four. Smith was the team leader in assists with seven, and Beth Bigham topped the team in steals with five.

Verona reached the consolation contest by defeating Bolivar 63-54 on Friday.

Smith tossed in 20 points to pace the Verona scoring attack against Bolivar. Also scoring for Verona were Chadd with 16 points, Carrasquillo with 14 points, Bigham with 8 points and Jori Dodson with 5 points.
