Forfeits proved the difference as the Monett Cubs opened the 2009-10 wrestling season at Branson last night with a 56-20 loss to the Pirates.
"I thought we looked good for the first match," said Head Coach Daryl Bradley. "Our shape was good and that was the result of the hard work the kids have been putting in.
"I am encouraged by our effort," Bradley said. "When we get some other kids in the line up and at the right weight, we will win some matches in the future."
Monett forfeited in the weights of 103, 119, 125, 171, 215 and 285, which accounted for the 36-point difference in the score.
Winning by pin for the Cubs were Nicky Roberts at 112 pounds at the 50-second mark and Juan Renteria at 135 pounds at the 2:57 mark.
Recording decisions were Carter Huffmaster at 140 pounds by an 8-5 score and Ethan Davis at 152 pounds by a 20-5 score.
Losing by pin were Chris Renteria at 135 pounds and Ty Irwin at 189 pounds.
Defeated by decision were Marcus Enloe at 145 pounds by a 6-5 score and Zach Irwin at 160 pounds by a 19-4 score.
In junior varsity action, Kurran Blamey won two maches by fall, and Joey Albrecht won one match.
Monett will next wrestle on Dec. 12 in the Carl Junction Tournament.
