Eleven Area Runners Compete At State Cross Country Meet

Monday, November 9, 2009

Eleven area runners, including two from Monett, competed Saturday in the state cross country meet in Jefferson City.

In the Class 3A race, junior Hannah Martin, of the Monett Lady Cubs, placed 73rd with a time of 22:54.

Sophomore Chris Renteria, of Monett, placed 120th with a time of 19:27.

"It was tough competition and a tough course on an unusually hot day for this time of year," said Monett Coach Andy Lemons. "Both Hannah and Chris ran in the middle of the day, and they were not used to the heat.

"Hannah battled injuries this season and came back strong at the end," Lemons said. "This was her third year at state and hopefully next year she will be a four-year qualifier.

"This was the first time for Chris," Lemons added. "I think he started out too fast, but it was a learning experience for him."

Also running in Class 3A was Jessica Barrientos, of the Cassville Ladycats. She finished 81st with a time of 23:04.

In Class 1A, Ben Cooper, of Wheaton, has the best area time. He finished 26th with a time of 18:47. Jakob Beck, of Wheaton, was 84th with a time of 20:14.

Running for Purdy was Josiah Jones and Corey Kelley. Jones was 55th with a time of 19:41 and Kelley finished 138th.

On the girls sides, Audrey Patton, of the Purdy Lady Eagles, finished 48th with a time of 24:34. Running for the Wheaton Lady Bulldogs were Breanna Brattin, 69th with a time of 25:22, and Shannon Burns, 91st with a time of 26:13.

Jacob Jennings, of Southwest in Washburn, competed in the Class 2A boys race. He finished in 39th place.
