* The Sunshine Club in Monett has three new members. They are Mrs. J.D. Buchanan, Mrs. Victor Cox and Mrs. Ed Howard.

* R.V. Blanchard, of Kirksville, has come to Monett to be the assistant manager of the J.C. Penney Store.

November 9, 1939

* Frances Weygandt, of Joplin and granddaughter of Mrs. G.W. Weygandt, of Monett, underwent an emergency major operation at Joplin General Hospital yesterday.

* Laura Kinser, of Monett, hosted a farewell courtesy party for Evelyn Kaesler, who will leave Saturday to take a job in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

* A Guernsey calf from the herd of George Mermoud, of Monett, will be auctioned at the Waldensian Home Harvest Festival on Wednesday.

* An estimated 2,000 people went through the building to inspect the new quarters of M.E. Gillioz and Gillioz Construction Company in Monett on Saturday.

* The first real taste of winter for Monett area residents was felt this morning when temperatures fell well below freezing.

* Mrs. Jerry Hoover, of Cabool, returned to her home yesterday after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Bradford in Monett.

* Work on one phase of Monett's water program, the $200,000 improvements to the No. 10 well in an effort to increase its production, is nearly complete.

* Monett Fire Department responded to two alarms yesterday, one to a car fire and the other to an electrical malfunction.

* Less Shelton, utilities superintendent of Monett, said a complete filmed inspection of the city's water standpipe at the Monett Industrial Park, got underway today.

* Army Reserve Private Nathan Bivens, of Cassville, has completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood.

* Medals were earned by several students at the annual Special Olympics Bowling Tournament held at The Lane Station in Monett.

* Cleo Elbert, girls head basketball coach at Monett High School, presented the program at yesterday's meeting of the Monett Kiwanis Club.

* Wives and sweethearts of the Monett Jaycees were entertained last night at a dinner and dance at the Casino.

* Announcement is made that beginning January 1, 1940, the age limit for old age assistance recipients under Social Security will be dropped from 70 to 65 years of age.

* Monett School Superintendent E.E. Camp was elected president of the Public College division at the state teacher's meeting in St. Louis last week.

* Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cree and daughter, of Kansas City, Kansas, left for home Sunday after a visit with relatives in Monett.

* Twenty students at Monett High School were initiated into the Future Homemakers of America chapter last night.

* Neosho's Wildcats eked out a 14 to 7 football victory over the Monett Cubs in a Big 9 game last night.

* Richard DeWalle, governor of the Missouri-Arkansas district of Kiwanis International, will be the featured speaker at the 45th anniversary dinner meeting of the Monett Kiwanis Club.

* Max Easley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Easley, of Monett, has been promoted to the rank of first lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

* Lawrence County became the first county in southwest Missouri to adopt a county sales tax as a result of the approval of a one-half cent proposal by county voters in a special election yesterday.

* Howard Mott and Gerald McCracken of Hobbs-Anderson Post 91 Monett American Legion attended the annual fall conference of the Department of Missouri American Legion and Auxiliary.

* The first of three distributions of free books at Monett Elementary School through the Reading Is Fundamental program will be held tomorrow, according to Marcy Petersen, chairman of the program.

* Monett football players named All-Conference in the Big 8 Conference were Lance Brumley, Price Richardson, Ryan Hallam, Steve Carnes, Scot Phillips, Brian Mozingo, Kris Elbert, Jamie Fisher and Steve Bandy.

* Lillie Morris, of Monett, was recently named Miss Junior Monett in the Miss Junior Missouri contest, and will compete for the state crown on November 13 and 14.

* The second annual Meeks Ladies Night will be November 11 at Meeks Lumber at 827 Jerome Lane in Monett.
