Beginning on Nov. 13, downtown Monett will come alive during the evening hours. "Broadway Nights" will take place the second Friday of every month as an effort to showcase businesses and provide activities.
"The idea is to create time when the entire family can enjoy music, relax and shop, a nice family evening," said Shaun Bennett, proprietor of Denali Dreams Gallery and Coffee Shop, who is organizing the event.
Participating stores will be open until at least 8 p.m. on these Fridays. Each will engage in the month's theme by having special guests in the businesses. Ten businesseshave agreed to stay open this month.
The theme for November will be focused on the arts, either visual or musical. A number of stores, including Denali Dreams and Mocha Jo's, will have musicians performing live. Bruner's Pharmacy, which features a rack of books by local authors, will have an author on hand. Others will have painters or others present with their creations to display and discuss.
In December, Bennett said merchants will be putting up displays for the holiday or specially dressed mannequins.
"We'll be doing this every month, not just for the holidays," Bennett said. "Many people don't have a chance to come downtown now because by the time they get off work, the stores are closed.
"We want this to be a date night, when families can drop their kids at The Den then go out for the evening," Bennett explained.
