Golden Age Games engage seniors

One of the most action-packed events at the Golden Age Games was the wheel chair races. Two different categories were held. The first event was a race using hands and feet and the second, pictured above, was using hands only.

The Missouri Health Care Association sponsored the annual Golden Age Games on Oct. 23 at the Monett High School gymnasium with Lacoba Homes of Monett hosting the District IV event.

Residents from 14 area facilities attended with the high team score going to Aurora Nursing Center. Joplin Health and Rehabilitation took second and Mt. Vernon Place Care placed third.

The oldest participant was Margaret Mettlach from Lacoba Homes.

Participating in this year's event were residents from: Aurora Nursing Center; Barry County Care Center, of Cassville; Carthage Health and Rehabilitation; Christian Healthcare, of Republic; Joplin Health and Rehabilitation; Lacoba Homes, of Monett; Lawrence County Manor, of Neosho; Meadows Care Center, of Joplin; Medicalodges Neosho; Monett Health Care; Mt. Vernon Place Care; Truman Healthcare, of Lamar; and Golden Living Center, of Springfield; and Webb City Health and Rehabilitation.

Winners in the various categories were:

Cow milking: Naomi Fulkerson, Republic, first place; Ruby Wellner, Joplin, second place; Sybol Lloyd, Monett, third place; Eva David, Carthage, fourth place: and Billie Young, Carthage, fifth place.

Bingo: David Lucas, Monett, first place; Marsha Gadert, Springfield, second place; Martha Cayce, Aurora, third place; Margaret Mettlach, Monett, fourth place; and Lou Higgenbotham, Mt. Vernon, fifth place.

Horseshoes: Esther Meissner, Lamar, first place; Melvin Thurston, Neosho, second place; Kevin Warner, Webb City, third place; Sybel Lloyd, Monett, fourth place; and Bonnie Bennett, Springfield, fifth place.

Quiz bowl: Polly Wilson, Cassville, first place; Marty Blakenship, Webb City, second place; Billy Peace, Webb City, third place; Geraldine Waldron, Republic, fourth place; and Grace Parker, Monett, fifth place.

Wheelchair race, hands only: Clayton Drake, Neosho, first place; Robert Drake, Republic, second place; Pat Case, Mt. Vernon, third place; and Grace Parker, Monett, fourth place.

Wheelchair race, hands and feet: Earl West, Mt. Vernon, first place; Marjorie Peterson, Lamar, second place; Emmogene Leach, Neosho, third place; Dorothy Becker, Aurora, fourth place; and Dyann Tonkin, Webb City, fifth place.

Group craft: Lacoba, shadow boxes; Carthage, ghost house; and Aurora Nursing Center, picnic table.

Monett won team spirit with Aurora placing second place and Carthage finishing third in that category.
