Thursday, November 5, 2009

Pierce City pulled the big surprise and Cassville won as expected in the first round of the state football playoffs last night.

In a Class 2A game at Warsaw, the underdog Pierce City Eagles nipped the state's fourth-ranked and previously undefeated Warsaw club, 14-12.

Next up for Pierce City, 7-4, will be the Lamar Tigers on Monday in a sectional encounter. Lamar was a 28-0 victor over El Dorado Springs last night. Lamar defeated Pierce City two weeks ago in district play 35-0.

Quarterback Wayne Sooter connected with Mitchell Gibson for two first half touchdown passes for Pierce City.

Warsaw, without its starting quarterback due to an injury, came back to 14-12 in the fourth quarter but failed on a two-point conversion attempt to tie the game.

Joseph Gouvion scored three touchdowns in the first quarter for Cassville to lead the Wildcats to a 56-14 victory over Aurora in a Class 3A contest.

Dustin Hedrick and Manuel Rios had TDs for Aurora, which trailed 49-6 at the half.

Cassville will now host Seneca, a 42-21 winner over Springfield Catholic last night, in a sectional game on Monday.
