Relay for Life to host kickoff event

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

The kickoff rally for Monett's 15th annual Relay for Life, the community-wide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, has been announced by 2010 Relay Co-Chairmen Jennifer Cendroski and Betty Messer. The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Monett City Park Casino.

The Relay will be held on May 7, 2010, at Monett's South Park.

"We invite all survivors, team captains, and members of the community who would like more information regarding the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Monett to join us for our official 2010 Relay Kickoff," said Cendroski. "Please join us to see what you can do to make this year a success."

The kickoff rally has traditionally been held in January. Cendroski said she hoped that holding the event in the fall would encourage as much community participation as possible.

"It allows our teams additional time to organize, as well as offers more 'training' time for new team captains to answer their questions and offer encouragement to the captains and their teams," Cendroski said. "Kickoff has always been open to anyone in the community including survivors and team captains, but the largest response we typically have is from team captains.

"We want to make sure that we keep the door open to anyone who would like to become more involved, because the Relay does take so much hard work from so many people and I do not want to discourage someone from becoming more involved because they feel like their only option is to form a team," Cendroski said.

After the kickoff rally, the primary emphasis of Relay volunteers has taken the shape of various fundraising events run by teams. Cendroski said the strength shown in joint undertakings has long been the foundation of Relay and can grow once the work is underway.

"It is a long time from November to May, and we are hoping to have everyone involved help to keep it in the public and to keep the community involved as I believe since this is such a community event," said Cendroski. "The community involvement is one of the Relay's keys to success."
