MHS Cubs Defeat Thomas Jefferson In Soccer

Playing a strong game on both offense and defense, the Monett Cubs defeated host Thomas Jefferson 5-1 on Monday.

Monett improved to 10-7 on the season by winning the last regular season contest. Monett clinched its second straight winning season.

"The team played very well together throughout the game," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson. "I was pleased with the unselfish passing by all members of the team.

"It was a great win for the team," Wilson said. "We enjoyed the opportunity to get both varsity and junior varsity players into the game. It was fun to watch as the two teams were blended together."

Scoring in the first half for the Cubs were Abraham Mejia off of a corner kick with the assist going to Mauricio Trujillo, Pedro Almaraz with the assist going to assisted by Will Snider and Trujillo with the assist going to assisted by Almaraz.

"The team has been searching for a consistent lineup and the late season adjustments are starting to pay off for the Cubs," Wilson said.

Alex Oserowsky scored the lone goal for Thomas Jefferson in the 30th minute of the first half.

Scoring in the second half for the Monett were Mejia with the assist going to Almaraz and Al Dohmen with the assist going to assisted by Trujillo.

"Dohmen, after saving hundreds of shots in goal for the Cubs the past two seasons, scored his first varsity goal of his career," said Wilson. "We really wanted to give Al the opportunity to score in this game. He has been magnificent all season and wanted to reward him for his hard work. The team was thrilled when the ball finally bounced into the goal."

Dohmen and Freddy Lopez combined to save eight of the nine shots on goal by the Cavaliers.

Monett now begins district play at Marshfield on Saturday as the third seed against the host Blue Jays, the sixth seed.
