Cassville Hands MHS Cubs First Football Loss

Monday, October 19, 2009

Erupting for 20 points in the second quarter, the host Cassville Wildcats knocked off the state's top-ranked Class 3A team, the Monett Cubs, for the second time in two years. Cassville won the contest 27-0 to take a giant stride toward potential Big 8 Conference and Class 3A District 12 football titles.

Cassville improved to 7-1 for the season, 5-0 in the league and 1-0 in the district. The Cubs went to 7-1 overall, 4-1 in the conference and 0-1 in the district.

In handing the Cubs their first regular season loss in 26 games dating back to the second game of the 2007 season, Cassville utilized a smothering defense and a solid rushing attack. Monett was limited to just 37 yards rushing and five first downs. The Wildcats ran for 239 yards with eight different players managing net yardage.

Defensive struggle

Early on it was a defensive struggle. Led by Beau Bounous, Ethan Davis, Jason Obermann, Kyle Fellwock and Tristan Homfeldt on defense, the Cubs forced Cassville to punt three times in the first quarter and did not allow a first down. Meanwhile, the Cubs managed just one first and 10 in the opening period.

It was the Cubs that had the first golden chance to get on the scoreboard. Following Monett's second punt, Obermann recovered a Wildcat fumble on the 27-yard line midway through the opening period. The Cubs managed to reach the 18-yard line for a third down and one but were shut down. Monett would never threaten again in the game.

Explosion of points

Beginning with the first play of the second quarter, the home team began its explosion of points.

Monett fumbled the ball on the first play of the stanza at its own 28-yard line. The ball bounded backwards as players from both team tried to recover. Finally, the ball was grabbed by Cassville's Devin Linenbrink in the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Wildcats the lead for good. The try for the extra point failed, and the score stayed 6-0 with 11:45 to go until intermission.

Quickly, the Cassville defensive unit forced a Cub punt. The Wildcats, with four different players running the ball, then drove 59 yards in 14 plays to score. The TD came on a seven-yard run by quarterback Trevor Tanner. The extra point by Matt Angel upped Cassville's lead to 13-0 with 4:31 remaining until intermission.

After another Monett punt, Cassville struck again. Runningback Joseph Gouvion broke free on a 70-yard gallop for a touchdown with 1:48 until halftime. Angel's extra point made it 20-0 at the half.

More defense

The third quarter was nearly a mirror image of the first period with more defense being highlighted. Both teams had to punt twice in the quarter.

The Cubs were able to reach midfield once, thanks mainly to a 25-yard pass completion from quarterback Tyler Green to wide receiver Cody Ryan, but shortly later had to punt the ball away again.

The two teams exchanged punts again early in the last quarter, but then Cassville mounted another scoring drive.

Final score

Starting on their own 49-yard line, it took the Wildcats 11 plays to go the 49 yards for the final score of the game. The TD came on a three-yard run by Gouvion. The extra point kick by Angel made it 27-0 with 4:36 to play.

Following the Cassville kickoff, the Wildcats immediately got the ball back on a pass interception. Reserves then saw most of the action for Cassville as the game wound down to its conclusion.

Gouvion led Cassville's ground game with 126 yards on 19 carries. Christian Privett gained 61 yards on 18 rushes for the Cubs.

This Friday, the Cubs will host the East Newton Patriots in another Big 8 and district contest.

Touchdowns: Cassville--Gouvion 2, Tanner, Linenbrink. Extra Point Kicks: Cassville--Angel 3.
