The visiting Willard Tigers used a stifling defensive effort to down the Monett Cubs 2-1 in a soccer contest at Monett South Park in a make-up game from the annual Monett Tournament on Monday evening.
"We had multiple opportunities throughout the game to score, but the story of this game was the defensive effort of both teams," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson.
Monett dropped to 8-5 on the season.
|Willard won the tournament with a 3-0 record followed by Carl Junction (2-1), Monett (1-2) and Aurora (0-3).||Willard scored right before halftime to gain a 1-0 advantage. Mauricio Trujillo scored the lone Cub goal on a penalty kick midway through the second half to tie the game.||The Tigers scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute to win the tournament championship.|
Al Dohmen continued his stellar play as goalie, stopping another 12 shots.
"We need to find a way to work together better because the season is drawing quickly to an end," Coach Wilson said.
The junior varsity Cubs lost 2-0 to Willard's jayvees in an evenly matched game.
Monett plays tomorrow at Springfield Greenwood.
