Despite playing well, no Monett Cubs tennis player advanced to state as a result of the district tennis tournament held Saturday in Rogersville.
"Because there were two dominant players in singles, I expected the other coaches to put their best players in doubles, so I put my top two in singles and I was wrong," said Monett Coach Bob Crain. "They (the other coaches) loaded the singles.
"My #1 doubles team had beaten the #2 and #3 seeds during the regular season," Crain said. "However, we never know what the other coaches are going to do until we turn our rosters in to the district manager."
District coaches chose to seed only four players in doubles and singles, and Monett's Mollie Fulton didn't get seeded and had to play the third seed from Rogersville in the second round and lost 5-8. Fulton did win her first match 8-1.
"She would have possibly been the fifth seed," said Crain.
Monett's Brittany Huebner was the other singles player. She won her first match 8-1, but because of the draw, she had to play the #1 seed from College Heights in the second round and lost.
"The draw was very unkind to us this year," Crain said.
Both Monett doubles teams lost in the first round. Katelyn Sperandio and Theresa Mangler lost 2-8 to Webb City's #2 team. Nrupa Desai and Sophie Fulton lost to Mt. Vernon's #1 team 6-8.
