Charles Eugene (Gene) Flaherty, 81, of Springfield, died on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.
Charles Eugene (Gene) Flaherty was born to Esta Mae (McCubbin) Flaherty and Charles Edward Flaherty on May 22, 1928 in Monett, Mo. He married the love of his life, Norma Lee (Vinson) Flaherty, on May 12, 1946.
Gene entered the Navy on May 22, 1946. He served as a SI MAM aboard the USS Nereus (AS 17) SubRon 7 Submarine Service. He was a World War II veteran and received the World War II Victory Medal. Following his discharge in March 1948, Norma gave birth to their precious daughter, Janet Lee (Flaherty) Watson.
While working in sales for Swift and Co., they moved to Springfield, Mo. Gene owned and operated restaurants and was very successful in food sales. He owned the White Mill Cafe located on Jefferson and Elm during the 50s and the Country Club Steak House located in the Country Club Shopping Center in the 60s. He retired from Kraft Foods in 1998.
Gene was a devout Christian and the family was members of St. Paul Methodist Church on Jefferson and Walnut. God came first in Gene and Norma's lives followed by their love for each other and dear love and devotion for family. Gene and Norma transferred their membership to Wesley United Methodist in 1991.
His loving Norma preceded him in death in December 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Lee (Flaherty) Watson and her husband Eddie Watson of Cabool, Mo.; a grandson, Shawn Patrick Callaway of Springfield, Mo.; a granddaughter, Holly Lee (Callaway) Rogers and her husband Charles Rogers of Springfield, Mo.; a great grandson, Austin James Rogers and a great granddaughter, Katelyn Lee Rogers; a nephew, Frank Davidson of Springfield, Mo.; a niece, Marilyn Heagerty of Monett, Mo.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 8, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Greenlawn South. Graveside services will be Friday, October 9, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
