Linda Dohmen, chairman of the United Fund Board, reported the organization awarded $39,175 in grants last year. Individual donations and payroll deductions have in the past helped to make a wide range of services possible in the area that otherwise might not be available.
A total of 23 organizations received support. These included: Boy Scout Troop #38 and Cub Scout Pack #140; Girl Scouts; Linn Thornton's Christmas dinner; the Monett Youth Baseball and Softball League; Monett Might Mite football; Project Graduation and Monett and Pierce City high schools; Strike Zone youth bowling; Oakview State School Parent Teacher Organization; Barry-Lawrence County Development Center; Monett Youth Wrestling; the Ozark Festival Orchestra's Young Artists program and Loaves and Fishes.
Financial support was also provided for nine area Head Start facilities located in Monett, Aurora, Butterfield, Cassville, Mt. Vernon and Shell Knob.
"We have 12 volunteer board members," said Dohmen. "There is no paid staff members, and our overhead for 2008 was under $1,000. We only paid out for printing and tax returns."
Serving on the board are Lisa Balmas, Ken Dudzik, Jane Sligar, Mark Nelson, Jack Schulz, Mona Works, Mike Brownsberger and Bonnie Witt-Schulte.
Applications for funding are due by the end of October. Forms are available from Balmas at UMB Bank and should be turned in at the bank.
