In a soccer encounter Monday night at Springfield Central, the Monett Cubs were victorious over the Springfield Central Bulldogs by a 3-1 score.
The win raised the Cubs record to eight wins against four defeats on the year.
"It was a sloppy effort, both offensively and defensively," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson. "We were able to battle through our fifth game in five days to get an important victory as we have positioned ourselves to earn a high seed in the Class 2 District 5 Tournament with improved play."
The host Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 early lead that almost lasted. Cub midfielder Uriel Rueda (assist to Mauricio Trujillo) scored in the final minute of the first half to tie the game 1-1.
Monett stole the momentum for good on an early second half goal by Trujillo (assist to Rueda). Trujillo found the back of the net again with 10 minutes remaining in the game to complete the scoring.
Trujillo and Rueda have combined to score 35 goals in the first 12 games of the season for Monett.
"The team is playing through a stretch of inconsistent play," said Wilson. "They are going to have to fight their way through it before the post season begins at the end of the month."
Monett plays again tomorrow at Thomas Jefferson.
