Lady Cubs Rally To Nip Reeds Spring In Softball

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Rallying for two runs in the fourth inning, the Monett Lady Cubs came from behind to edge Reeds Spring, 4-3, in a non-conference softball game at Monett North Park on Monday.

Monett improved to 17-7 on the year.

"It was ugly, but a win is a win," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz.

"Neither team was real sharp defensively," Goetz added. "I was proud of the way we battled back to get the win. We ran the bases well today."

Falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first when the Reeds Spring leadoff hitter homered, the Lady Cubs came right back in the bottom half to take the lead.

Tiffany Carter led off the bottom of the first for Monett by striking out, but reached first when the ball got past the catcher. Carver stole second and scored when Bailey Wormington bunted and reached first base on a throwing error. Wormington scored on another throwing error.

Reeds Spring struck back with a pair of runs in the third for a 3-2 lead.

In the fourth, the Lady Cubs bounced back with the tying and winning runs. Avery Bounous and Aubrey Lemaster singled. Bounous scored on Lemaster's hit and Lemaster scored on an error.

Paige Marney was the winning pitcher. She struck out 11.

Monett also won the junior varsity game 4-1. Jessica Harper and Josee Krueger had hits to drive in runs. Krueger was the winning pitcher.

Monett plays today against the Nevada Tigers in the first round of the district tournament at Carl Junction.
