Monett split four games over the weekend in the Carthage softball tournament.
"It was a very competitive tournament with 16 good teams in it," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz.
"Chillicothe is the best team we have seen all season with the best pitcher," he said. "I was proud we gave ourselves a chance by tying the game in the sixth inning. Overall, we had a good tournament."
The Lady Cubs opened the tourney against Webb City and lost 5-0. Monett then defeated Purdy 7-0 and Republic 6-0 before losing to Chillicothe 3-1.
EmiLee Davis had two hits in the loss to Webb City. Paige Marney was the losing pitcher. She struck out seven.
Marney came back in the game against Purdy by hurling a no-hitter. She struck out nine.
Monett scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning enroute to beating Purdy 7-0.
Davis, Marney and Avery Bounous had RBI singles in the first. The fourth run was scored on a fielder's choice by Raigan Ratliff.
The Lady Cubs added two runs in the fourth when Wormington scored on a passed ball and Davis crossed the plate following an error.
Against Republic, the Lady Cubs scored in the first on a ground out by Wormington. Monett added two runs in the third when Davis had a RBI ground out and Logan Swope plated a run with a double. The Lady Cubs ended the scoring in the fourth inning with three runs. Wormington singled in two runs and she scored on an error.
Marney got the win. She struck out nine and allowed five hits.
Behind 1-0 going into the sixth inning against Chillicothe, the Lady Cubs tied the game 1-1. Aubrey Lemaster bunted for a single, advanced to second on a bunt by Tiffany Carver and scored on a single by Davis.
Chillicothe came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the winning margin.
Marney took the loss on the mound. She struck out six.
"It was good to be playing tough teams to get us ready for the district tournament starting Wednesday," Goetz said.
Monett next plays today at home versus Reeds Spring.
