Cubs Capture Third Place In Willard Soccer Tourney

Monday, October 5, 2009

The Monett Cubs soccer team defeated Webb City 5-2 to claim third place this weekend in the Willard Tournament.

Monett improved to 7-4 on the year.

"This was a difficult tournament to compete in," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson.

"We knew going in that any one of the eight teams competing could win this tournament," Wilson said. "Moving forward we will take a great deal of experience away from this tournament that will help prepare us for the district tournament in November. "We still have a way to go in terms of improving as a team. If this team continues to put in the hard work every day and play as a team, we will be a very dangerous team come district play," Wilson added.

In the first game of the tournament on Friday night, the Cubs defeated New Covenant 5-4 in a last minute thriller. The Cubs dominated the first half and built a 2-0 halftime lead on a pair of goals by Mauricio Trujillo, one unassisted and the other on an assist by Jose Lopez.

In the second half, Trujillo completed his fourth hat trick in nine games to increase the Cub lead to 3-0 (assist to Uriel Rueda) in the 44th minute.

New Covenant shaved the Cub lead to 3-1 in the 45th minute. Monett responded with a goal by Rueda (assist to Trujillo) in the 61st minute. New Covenant quickly got itself back in the game with goals in the 69th and 71st minutes to trim the Cub lead to 4-3.

"Our young guys did not step up and play well when given the chance to," Wilson stated. "They have to play better to give us depth."

New Covenant tied the game in the 75th minute at 4-4, but the Cubs did not panic. With less than a minute remaining, Lopez scored on a header off of a corner kick by Trujillo to secure a Monett victory.

Al Dohmen saved 11 shots in the game.

"This was a good game to start the Willard Tournament for us," said Wilson. "We started out slow because of the Cassville game on Thursday night but found a way to win and advance to the semi-finals."

In the semi-finals, the Cubs lost to 2008 district champion Bolivar 5-2.

"They have a really good team, especially defensively," Wilson said. "We had our chances to win this game but just had too many breakdowns to overcome. That's the point I made to the team after the game was over, you have to play a flawless game against a team of that caliber."

Rueda and Lopez scored the Monett goals (assists to Francisco Morales and Trujillo).

Al Dohmen was credited with 10 saves.

In the third place game, the Cubs beat Webb City 5-2. "It was nice to get some payback for the overtime loss on Tuesday," said Wilson. "This game was rather subdued as both teams were hoping for an all rematch final. I was very proud of the heart this team showed by not letting the previous game affect the outcome of the third place game." Trujillo and Lopez had two goals, and Daniel Salazar had a goal for Monett.

Monett is at Springfield Central today.
