Friday night's football contest between the Aurora Houn' Dawgs and the visiting Monett Cubs will pit two teams who are long-time rivals and two teams heading in opposite directions.
Ranked #1 in the state of Missouri in Class 3A by the Associated Press, the Cubs are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big 8 Conference. On the other side, Aurora is 1-4 for the year and 1-3 in the league.
Last week, Monett defeated Carl Junction, 14-0, while the Houn' Dawgs were beaten by Seneca, 35-7.
While the Cubs and Aurora have pretty even win-loss records against each other throughout their football history, Monett has won the last five meetings, including a 63-7 victory last year. Aurora's last win over the Cubs came in 2003 by a score of 20-6. In 2002, Aurora also came out on top 10-6.
Records since 1927 show just how close the two teams are in games facing each other. The Cubs and Houn' Dawgs have played each other 81 times with Monett holding just a one-game edge, 41-40, over that time span. However, the Cubs trail Aurora in points scored by only two points. Aurora scored 1,310 points in those 81 games to 1,308 for the Cubs.
Offensively, the Cubs will likely start Jesse Bremer, Ryan Cody and Spenser Witt as wide receivers, Chris Eimer as slot back, Jacob Murphy and Beau Bounous as tackles, Jeff Craft at center, Jason Obermann and Ryne Johnson as guards, Tyler Green at quarterback and Christian Privett at runningback.
Defensively, Monett is expected to start Obermann and Bounous at ends, Kyle Fellwock at nose guard, Ethan Davis, Tristen Homfeldt, Jacob Childress and Matt Schiffner as linebackers, Spenser Witt and Eimer as cornerbacks and Marcus Enloe and Brandon Marion as safeties.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
