Murderer receives sentence

A Republic man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for stabbing his ex-wife to death on March 12 in Marionville.

Robert E. Duda, Sr. was sentended on Sept. 14 to 22 years in prison for the second degree murder of Kathy Duda. The sentencing was handed down by 39th District Circuit Judge Robert Wiley. Duda also received 15 years for armed criminal action for use of a knife in the homicide. The sentences will be served concurrently.

A third charge of burglary was dismissed.

Duda was arrested at the scene on the day of the murder. According to police reports, Duda went to his his ex-wife's home, pursued her with a knife into the house and stabbed her repeatedly. Duda then stabbed himself. Kathy Duda was dead when officers arrived.

The case was presented to Judge Wiley by Lawrence County Assistant Prosecutor Byron Gruber. Duda was represented by Springfield attorney Richard Bender.
