The Monett Cubs soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime decision at the hands of the Webb City Cardinals last evening at Monett South Park.
The loss drops the Cubs' overall record on the season to 5-2.
"We expected a tough game as the Cardinals are much improved and that is exactly what Webb City gave us," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson.
"We just were not as crisp as they have been the past two games," Wilson said. "We have plenty that we can improve on, both offensively and defensively, before Thursday night. Hopefully the team will use this loss as motivation to get better in both practice and in games."
Monett opened the scoring in the first half at the 22nd minute on a goal by Uriel Rueda, and that 1-0 lead stood up until halftime.
Webb City scored in the 52nd minute of the second half on a counter attack to tie the game at 1-1. Monett regained the advantage off of a corner kick goal by Francisco Morales in the 66th minute for a 2-1 lead.
Scoring with just four minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals took that momentum into overtime and scored three minutes into the extra session.
Goalkeeper Al Dohman saved 13 of the 16 shots he faced.
"The team is obviously disappointed in their performance last night," Wilson said. "Sometimes a loss can serve as motivation and that is what we are going to try to get the boys to do in this situation."
The Cubs play rival Cassville tomorrow at home.
