Lady Cubs Go 4-1 In Softball Tournament

Monday, September 28, 2009

By winning four of five games in the 18-team Springfield softball tournament last Friday and Saturday, the Monett Lady Cubs came away with consolation honors.

"It really hurt us going 1-1 the first day because it sent us to the consolation part of the tournament," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "But going 4-1 in this tournament is a great accomplishment."

Monett was defeated by Miller, 5-0, in the first game Friday. The Lady Cubs managed just three hits.

Avery Bounous was the losing pitcher for Monett. She struck out eight.

In the second game Friday, the Lady Cubs nipped West Plains, 1-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Paige Marney.

The only run of the game came in the second inning. Ashley Schmidly led off for Monett with a double and scored on an error.

Monett beat Parkview, 9-0, in the first game on Saturday.

The Lady Cubs got all the runs they would need in the first inning. Tiffany Carver hit a home run. EmiLee Davis tripled and score on a wild pitch.

Monett added a run in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth. Marney was the winning pitcher.

Glendale fell to the Lady Cubs, 9-1, in the next game.

Marney drove in two runs for Monett and was the winning pitcher.

The Lady Cubs pounded Willard, 12-0, in the final game.

Monett, 14-4 on the year, put the game out of reach with a six-run third frame.

In the big third inning, Bailey Wormington doubled in a run, Avery Bounous had a RBI single, Carver had a RBI double, Ashley Schmidly plated a run with a single and two runs scored on an error.

Monett is at McDonald County tomorow.
