Cubs Dominate Hillcrest In Soccer, 10-0

Friday, September 25, 2009

Getting plenty of offense as well as solid defense, the host Monett Cubs easily turned back the Hillcrest Hornets, 10-0, in a soccer game last night.

Monett improved to 5-1 on the season.

"The team is showing signs of improvement, especially in the area of passing," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson.

"The coaching staff is continuing to stress to find ways to get better every day," Wilson added. "The week ahead will be a strong indicator of where we are as a team."

The scoring started quickly in the first half as leading goal scorer, Mauricio Trujillo, found the back of the net on a break away just three minutes into the game (assist to Jose Lopez). Lopez scored his second goal of the season in the 12th minute on a rainbow shot that went over the Hillcrest goalie's head and bounced into the goal (assist to Trujillo).

Trujillo quickly scored twice in the 18th and 20th minutes to boost the Cub lead to 4-0 just 20 minutes into the contest (assists to Uriel Rueda). It is the third hat trick for Trujillo in the first six games.

Freshman Francisco Morales scored his fourth goal in two games in the 31st minute (assist to Trujillo). Trujillo scored his fourth and final goal of the game just beating the first half clock to give the Cubs a 6-0 halftime lead (assist to Abraham Mejia).

"Mejia does not get the recognition he deserves," Coach Wilson stated. "His stellar play this season is one of the major reasons why we are dominating games."

The Cubs scored just 30 seconds into the second half on a quick goal by Rueda (assist to Mejia). Lopez scored for the second time in the game on a beautiful header in the 44th minute (assist to Rueda). Rueda scored again in the 52nd minute (unassisted). Monett capped the scoring in the 57th minute on senior Daniel Salazar's first ever varsity goal (assist to Pedro Almaraz).

The junior varsity Cubs lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in the final minutes of the game. The loss drops their record to 0-2-2 on the young season.

Monett is next in action Tuesday in a home contest with Webb City beginning with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game aty 6:30 p.m.
