Extra innings were necessary before the Monett Lady Cubs could prevail, 1-0, over the Aurora Houn' Dawgs last night in a Big 8 Conference softball contest.
Monett improved to 4-2 in the league and 10-3 on the year.
"Once again, we had a lot of opportunities to score," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz.
"We have got to quit leaving runners in scoring position and find a way to get them across home plate," Goetz continued. "I was proud of our defense giving us a chance to win."
Both teams managed just five hits in the nine-inning battle. It took an Aurora error to decide the game.
Josee Krueger led off the top of the ninth with a single. Bailey Wormington put down a sacrifice bunt to move Krueger to second base. Logan Swope followed with another sacrifice bunt to send Krueger to third. Avery Bounous then reached on an infield error as Krueger scored the deciding run.
Paige Marney was the winning pitcher for Monett. She struck out eight in the game, including striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
Monett's junior varsity also won, 6-1. Jessica Harper, Meagan Shearburn and Krueger each had two hits for the Monett jayvees.
