The Monett soccer team bounced back from a disappointing 1-0 loss on Thursday at the hands of Carl Junction to defeat Aurora 10-0 on Saturday in the Monett Tournament. The second game scheduled for Monett on the day was postponed due to rain. The win on Saturday secured a championship match up with the Willard Tigers when the third game for each team is played.
"I was very proud of the resilience this team showed this weekend," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson. "The team has not played its best soccer yet and we are 4-1. That's a very good sign in the weeks to come."
In the Thursday night game, the Cubs lost a difficult 1-0 decision in a rematch against Carl Junction. The Bulldogs scored 15 minutes into the game on a goal by Brandon Kennedy.
"We looked lost the entire game," Wilson said. "Our passing was horrendous and it will be fixed."
Al Dohmen saved nine of the ten shots he faced.
On Saturday the Cubs kept the pressure on the entire game. Mauricio Trujillo logged a hat trick (two assists to Uriel Rueda and one to Clayton Patton) for Monett. Freshman Francisco Morales also had a hat trick (assists to Patton, Rueda, and Daniel Salazar). It was also the first time Morales has scored for the Cubs.
Rueda (assist to Harald Gabriel), Patton (assist to Rueda), Gabriel (assist to Trujillo) and Jose Lopez (assist to Trujillo) scored one goal each. "Our defense has been stifling all season," Wilson stated. "They deserve a lot of credit in the wins we have posted."
In other games Willard defeated Aurora 6-0, Willard defeated Carl Junction 4-0 and Carl Junction defeated Aurora 7-0.
Monett plays tonight at Willard.
