For the second straight game the Monett Lady Cubs were involved in a 1-0 game but this time came out on the winning side. The visiting Lady Cubs defeated East Newton last night in Big 8 Conference play.
Monett is now 3-1 in the league and 8-2 on the year.
"We did a better job offensively," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "It doesn't show in the score, but we hit the ball hard. We didn't strike out as much as we did against Seneca."
Pitcher Paige Marney, of the Lady Cubs, threw a brilliant one-hitter. She came within one out of tossing a n-hitter. Kasondra Kruse had a clean single in the last inning to spoil the bid.
Marney struck out seven and walked just one in picking up the win for Monett.
The Lady Cubs got their only run in the bottom of the third inning. Marney singled with two outs. Katie Upchurch pinch-ran and scored on a triple by EmiLee Davis, her battery mate.
Monett also won the B-game, 3-0. Upchurch and Raigan Ratliff each had two hits for Monett's B-team.
The Lady Cubs are in action today at Southwest in non-conference action.
