MHS Cubs Stay Unbeaten In Soccer, 5-1

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Pulling away in the second half, the visiting Monett Cubs defeated the Carl Junction Bulldogs, 5-1, in a soccer game Monday night.

Monett remained unbeaten on the year at 3-0.

"We struggled to find a flow offensively throughout the game but found a way to win," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson.

The first 10 minutes of the game were back and forth. Momentum turned to the side of the Cubs when striker Jose Lopez made his season debut. Five minutes after Lopez stepped on the field, Mauricio Trujillo found the back of the net unassisted in the 15th minute giving the Cubs an early 1-0 lead. Uriel Rueda scored in the 28th minute on a rebound shot off the foot of Julio Velazquez to increase the Cub halftime lead to 2-0.

Play in the second half was back and forth until the 54th minute when Jose Lopez scored his first goal of the season off of a corner kick pass from Julio Velazquez to make the score 3-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 69th minute on a goal by Jiles Andrew. It was the first goal the Cubs have given up all season after 219 consecutive scoreless minutes. The Cubs quickly responded in the 70th minute as Rueda added his second goal of the game on a lead pass from Ricardo Ortega. Abraham Mejia concluded the scoring with a header off of a corner kick pass from Trujillo.

Goalie Al Dohmen was stellar again as he saved seven of the eight shots on the goal.

"It takes a lot of grit and determination to win games on the road," Coach Wilson said. "Going 3-0 on the road before playing a home game is a huge accomplishment.

"The team also realizes that there is plenty of room for improvement," Wilson added.

Monett begins play on Thursday at home in the Monett Tournament in a rematch against Carl Junction beginning at 7 p.m.

In the junior varsity game, Monett and Carl Junction tied 0-0.
