Monett Cubs Steamroll By Eldon, 47-0

Monday, September 14, 2009

Clicking on all cylinders, the Monett Cubs throttled the visiting Eldon Mustangs, 47-0, last Friday night in a non-conference football game at Burl Fowler Stadium.

Game statistics show Monett's total dominance over the Mustangs. The Cubs amassed 337 total yards on just 27 plays from scrimmage, an average of 12.5 yards per play. Eldon was limited to just 94 total offensive yards on 54 plays from scrimmage by Monett's defensive unit, an average of just 1.7 yards per play.

Monett, 3-0 on the year, kicked off to start the contest. It would be less than two minutes before the Cubs would be on the scoreboard.

Initial score

Eldon was limited to six yards on three plays at the onset by the Cub defensive bunch, led by Jason Obermann, Beau Bounous, Kyle Fellwock, Jacob Childress, and had to punt.

It took the Cubs just two plays to get the initial score. Quarterback Tyler Green passed to slotback Chris Eimer for 11 yards on the first play. Runningback Christian Privett got loose on the next play for 47 yards and the touchdown. Eimer's extra point made the score 7-0 will still 10:12 left in the opening period.

The visitors managed one first down following the ensuing kickoff but then were stopped and had to punt the ball away.

Monett had the ball back on the 42-yard line and it took the home team just three plays to go 58 yards.

Eimer went around the end on a nifty 17-yard run. Privett followed with a 21-yard jaunt to the 25-yard line. Green hooked up with receiver Brandon Marion for those 25 yards and the TD. The extra point attempt failed, leaving the score 13-0 in Monett's favor with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter.

Golden opportunity

Pressure by the Cub defensive line soon presented the Monett offense a golden opportunity.

Eldon, again denied any movement on offense following the Cub kickoff, had to punt on fourth down. The ball was snapped over the punter's head, recovered by the Mustangs on the 14-yard line but giving Monett the ball.

The Cubs scored in two plays. Green passed 11 yards to receiver Ryan Cody for a first and goal at the three. Cody ran the ball in from there for the touchdown. The Cubs faked the extra point in favor of a two-point conversion run by holder Marcus McCaffrey, which was successful to up the tally to 21-0 with 3:15 to go in the first stanza.

Second quarter

On its next possession, Eldon finally threatened. The Mustangs got three first and tens in moving the ball into Monett territory, mainly behind the passing and running of quarterback John Hall.

Eldon reached the 29-yard line before being faced with fourth down and 11. The Mustang quarterback was then intercepted by Eimer, who returned the ball 30 yards to mid-field for the Cubs.

Monett went 50 yards in six plays to score again. The big play of the drive was a 31-yard pass from Green to receiver Jesse Bremer, putting the ball at the two. Privett bullied the ball into the end zone on the next play. Eimer's extra point made the score 28-0 with 4:53 to go until intermission.

Adding on

The Cubs would add on two more scores before halftime. The first one was set up by a blocked punt by Ethan Davis and Tristen Homfeldt's 31-yard return of the ball to the nine-yard line. It took one play to get the touchdown, a pass from Green to Spenser Witt. The extra point try was no good, leaving the score 34-0.

The second score came with just 41 seconds left in the half. On the first play from scrimmage following an Eldon punt, Privett took advantage of excellent offensive line blocking by Jeff Craft, Ryne Johnson, Obermann and Bounous to go 35 yards to the one. Privett scored the TD on the next play. When the two-point conversion run failed, the halftime score became 40-0.

Second half

It took just 57 seconds for the Cubs to score again after the second half started. Eldon kicked off when the Cubs taking over on the 24-yard line. Privett broke through a huge hole created by his offensive line and rambled 76 yards for the touchdown. Witt's extra point made the score the final of 47-0.

Reserves on both offensive and defense saw action the rest of the game for Monett. The Mustangs still could do little on offense against the Cubs, having to punt once and having a pass intercepted by Carlin Ballay on another occasion.

Monett's second team offense also could do little in the second half, although Jarred Witt did complete a couple of passes to get the Cubs within striking distance at the 24-yard line late in the game.

Privett rushed eight times for 201 yards for the Cubs. Green completed all five of his passes for 87 yards.

This Friday the Cubs will to Mt. Vernon to play their first Big 8 Conference game of the season.

Touchdowns: Monett--Eimer, Cody, Witt, Privett 4. Extra Point Kicks: Monett--Eimer 2, Witt. Two-Point Conversion: Monett--McCaffrey.
