Pitcher Paige Marney, of the Monett Lady Cubs, made an early lead stand up as Monett nipped the Lamar Lady Tigers, 2-1, in a Big 8 Conference softball game at Monett North Park yesterday.
Monett went to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the league.
"It was nice scoring early but we left some chances to score later on in the game," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz.
"We left runners on every inning but the fifth. But we are hitting the ball hard, just right at people. Once again, defense played well and helped us win."
Marney went the distance for the Lady Cubs. She allowed just three hits and one unearned run. She struck out eight.
The Lady Cubs took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning. Tiffany Carver hit a one-out single and stole second. Carver advanced to third on a ground out by EmiLee Davis and scored on a single by Bailey Wormington.
In the second, Logan Swope doubled, was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Aubrey Lemaster and scored on a wild pitch.
Monett's junior varsity won by a 12-3 score. Meagan Shearburn and Andrea Soriano each had two hits for the jayvee Lady Cubs.
Monett will travel to Southwest on Thursday for a non-conference contest.
