Wednesday, September 9, 2009

The Monett Lady Cubs slipped to 0-3 in the young volleyball season, losing in straight sets at Cassville (3-1) on Tuesday night, 25-14 and 25-12.

Pierce City and Purdy were also defeated while Verona was victorious.

"We had some great moments, but just couldn't put anything together," said Monett Coach Shyrah Boyle following the match against Cassville. "Too many mental errors."
Senior Tandi Glouse provided the highlights for the Lady Cubs, collecting a pair of stuff blocks while battling at the net with Cassville's tandem of Marti Richmiller and Naomi Beck.
Monett lead briefly in the first set, 1-0, before falling behind 10-5. Although the Lady Cubs pulled within a point on two occasions, 10-9 and 14-13, the host Lady Wildcats would not relinquish the lead. Richmiller served for seven consecutive points to close out the first set for the home team.
Monett's Amanda McKinney served up and ace for a 1-0 lead to start the second set. The teams reached a 2-2 tie with the Lady Cubs building some momentum, but a rotation violation cost them a point and the serve. Hunter Glouse served for another tie at 4-4, but Cassville rolled to leads of 13-8, 22-10, and 24-12 before Olivia Cline tapped the match-winner over the net for the 25-12 final.
"That's the best we've played," said Cassville's Jerry Schreiner afterwards.
