MHS Cubs, Privett Run Over Marshfield, 35-14

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

With Monett's offensive line opening huge holes, senior runningback Christian Privett rushed for a whopping 295 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Cubs to a 35-14 home opening non-conference football triumph over the Marshfield Bluejays at Burl Fowler Athletic Field last Friday night.

Defense also played a significant role in Monett's victory as the Cubs went to 2-0 on the season. Monett's secondary intercepted two Bluejay aerials, one leading to a score. The defensive crew's relentless pursuit resulted in a safety and containment of the Marshfield quarterback.

Statistics of the game show Monett's dominance. The Cubs out-gained the visitors 388 yards to 173 with 88 of the Bluejay yardage and both touchdowns coming against the Monett reserves in the last four and a half minutes of the game.

First touchdown

Marshfield, 1-1 on the year, took the opening kickoff and managed a couple of first downs behind the running of Zach Hildebrand. The Cub defense then stiffened and forced a punt near mid-field.

It took the home team just five plays to go 70 yards for the first score. Privett, behind the fine blocking of Beau Bounous, Jason Obermann, Jacob Murphy, Jeff Craft and Ryne Johnson, broke free for a 61-yard jaunt to the seven-yard line.

Two plays later runningback Tristen Homfeldt punched the ball in for the first score of the night. Chris Eimer's extra point made the score 7-0 with 7:02 remaining in the opening period.

Following the ensuing kickoff, the Monett defensive group forced a punt from the 40-yard line. Homfeldt got to the Bluejay punter before he could get the kick off for a 16-yard loss.

The Cubs were unable to take advantage of the good field position and turned the ball over on downs.

Quick scores

Once again the Monett defense shut down the Bluejays. On third down and four, Ethan Davis sacked the Marshfield quarterback for a 13-yard loss.

On the next play, the ball was snapped over the Bluejay punter's head and the punter kicked the ball out of the end zone stopping a touchdown for Monett but resulting in a safety. The score was now 9-0 in Monett's favor with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter.

Eleven seconds later Monett would add on to the score. Privett took the ball on the first play from scrimmage after Marshfield's free kick and raced 58 yards for the TD. The kick for the point after failed, leaving the Cubs in front 15-0 with 2:25 to go in the first stanza.

Defense takes over

For the rest of the first half defense dictated play.

Marshfield was able to move the ball at the end of the first quarter and into the second, advancing to the Monett 35 before being stopped by Kyle Fellwock, Jacob Childress, Matt Schiffner, Bounous, Homfeldt, Davis and others of the Cub defensive bunch.

Both teams were made to punt in the second stanza. A fumble stopped a Cub scoring chance, and Spenser Witt's pass interception with seconds left before intermission halted a Marshfield scoring attempt.

Third quarter

The third quarter belonged mostly to the Cubs, although losing the ball on a pass interception as well as penalties kept Monett from the scoreboard except for one play.

Midway through the quarter, Privett got loose again for 58 yards and a touchdown. The extra point was no good, and the Cubs were on top 21-0.

The game settled down into a defensive struggle for the rest of the quarter and into the final period. It would be defense that would lead to the next points.

Another pass theft

With Marshfield in possession of the ball and getting close to the Cub goal, Witt came up with another pass theft. This time he sprinted down the sidelines for 70 yards before being hauled down at the one-yard line.

Given this golden chance, the Cubs got it done. On the next play, Privett smashed into the end zone for the TD. Witt added the extra point to make the tally 28-0 with 6:56 remaining in the contest.

It was four downs and out on Marshfield's next possession. Following the punt, it took Monett just two plays to score. Privett again escaped the Bluejay defense and rambled 67 yards for Monett's final touchdown. He added the extra point to up the count to 35-0 with 4:54 remaining to be played.

Reserves saw action for the Cubs the rest of the way, and Marshfield took advantage to get two scores as the game wound down.

Marshfield scores

The first Bluejay touchdown came on a 12-yard run by Dillon Harms with 1:26 to play to make the tally 35-6 when the extra point was unsuccessful.

Marshfield went for the onsides kick and it worked, giving the visitors the ball again.

The Bluejays went down to get another score with just 35 seconds remaining in the game on a nine-yard pass from quarterback Jared Greenlee to receiver Brad Dinwiddie. The two-point conversion attempt was good on another Dinwiddie pass, this one to Jake Van Diggelen to make it the final score 35-14.

This Friday, the Cubs will also be at home, hosting the Eldon Mustangs in a non-conference encounter.

Touchdowns: Monett--Privett 4, Homfeldt. Marshfield--Dinwiddie, Harms. Extra Point Kicks: Monett--Eimer, Witt, Privett. Two-Point Conversions: Marshfield--Van Diggelen. Safety: Monett--Enloe.
