Employing relentless offense and stifling defense, the visiting Monett Cubs opened the 2009 soccer season last night with an 8-0 triumph over the Aurora Houn' Dawgs.
"It's good to finally get our season started," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson. "Three and a half weeks of practice is a long time to wait to play your first game. The team has been very anxious for the first game to arrive."
Monett scored three goals in the first half and then put the game out of reach in the second half with five more goals.
"We were able to get ahead in the first half without playing our best," the coach said. "We played much better in the second half, but to reach our goals of playing deep into November, improvement in games and practice is essential to accomplishing those goals. I fully expect when this team is firing on all cylinders later next week, we'll be very difficult to beat."
Attacking on offense for most the game, the Cubs had an impressive 26 shots on the Aurora net while Monett's defense limited Aurora to just six shots on its goal.
Uriel Rueda and Mauricio Trujillo provided the offensive spark for Monett. Rueda had three goals, and Trujillo scored four times.

The second half opened with back-to-back goals by Trujillo to lengthen Monett's lead to 5-0. Harald Gabriel has an assist on Trujillo's second goal.
Julio Velanzquez entered the scoring column for Monett with a goal to up the score to 6-0. Abraham Mejia had the assist.
Trujillo and Rueda had unassisted goals to end thee scoring.
Goalie Al Dohmen had three saves for the Cubs.
The junior varsity game ended in a 0-0 tie.
Monett will travel to Cassville on Tuesday to face off against their Barry Council rival.
